Residents of St. Paul’s Parish in 1870, who were represented

~~~
st paul's 1858The second St. Paul’s Anglican church, photographed in 1858.
Construction of St. Paul’s Anglican church at Image Plain, on the west side of the Red River, was organized by Rev. David Jones of the Church Missionary Society, beginning 1824. The name Image Plain (Ka nanahtek paskwaw) arose because mirages that shimmered above the prairie were frequently viewed from this location.
The church and parish became known locally as Middlechurch (middle church) because it was located between St. John’s (a.k.a the upper church, 6 miles up river) and St. Andrew’s (the lower church, down river). The congregation which attended the first service at St. Paul’s on 30 January 1825 arrived from both sides of the river and was of mixed faiths.
The flood of 1826 badly damaged the wooden building, which was patched up until it was finally replaced in 1844 (and, after damage due to the flood of 1856, it would again be replaced between 1876 and 1880 at a new site).
The Archibald Census of 1870 recorded 328 people living within the parish boundaries (which extended to both sides of the river; but seem to have had somewhat different north-south dimensions in other records), who professed to be Protestant and 10 people who professed to be Catholic (designated ‘RC’ below).
John Sanders/ Saunders/ Saunderson (First Nations/ Métis; born to Palm Saunders and Jane Forbes) married Catherine Caroline Nelson (Métis; “Native of the Mackenzie District”). John had become a member of the St. Peter’s Band when his mother, Jane, who was Métis, took treaty in 1871 (Treaty 1). Jane, being no. 361 of the Band, withdrew from treaty in 1885. Apparently she had tried to get scrip, but failed. John applied to withdraw from Treaty 1 in 1896. At the time, he was working as a trapper and living in Prince Albert [SK]. As of 1901 he was still supplying evidence to support his application — naming as his children: Elizabeth Jane (b. 1880); John Robert (b. 1880; d. 1896); Albert James (b. 1885); Hans Peter (b. 1891) Sophie Ann (b. 1894); Caroline Catherine (b. 1896); and William Charles (b. 1900, deceased). Officials determined that they owed him over $600 and wanted him to transfer membership to another Band in his vicinity, so that such a large sum of arrears would not accumulate again. John requested a transfer to John Smith’s Band (Treaty 6), Duck Lake Agency (pending their consent).
