St. Charles’

Residents of St. Charles’ Parish in 1870, who were represented

Note: The electoral parish/ neighbourhood was located on the south side of the Assiniboine River, but the ecclesiastical parish crossed the river, as Catholic congregants lived on both sides.

st charlesSt. Charles’ frame church built 1866.

In 1854 Bishop Alexandre-Antoinin Taché directed Father Louis-François Laflèche (Métis) to found the Catholic mission of St. Charles. A small log chapel was built on land granted by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1855. Laflèche travelled from St. Boniface to provide religious services and instruction in the winter. In the summer he journeyed with his parishioners on the buffalo hunt.

It was not until 1866 that a frame church was constructed (near the original chapel). St. Charles began developing into a parish at this time — though it was not canonically erected as a parish (in charge of its own birth, marriage, and death registers) until 1876. [Sadliers’ Catholic Directory (1872), 27, indicated that by 1872 the chapel was directed by Rev. J.J. Allard].

By 1870 over 200 people (drawn from both sides of the river) made up the congregation of St. Charles’ church. Inhabitants of the parish who professed to be Protestant are designated ‘P’ in the list below.
