Fleming 1858 Coflenz

John Arnot Fleming, woodcut, showing the Coblenz/ Forks of the Red River and Assiniboine Rivers, 1858, sketched from St. Boniface East and looking across to St. Boniface West/ Fort Rouge on the south bank of the Assiniboine as well as Upper Fort Garry on the north bank. Source: Henry Youle Hind, Narrative of the Canadian Red river exploring expedition of 1857, and of the Assinniboine and Saskatchewan exploring expedition of 1858 (London: Longman Green, Longman and Roberts, 1860), 153.

Note: In Winnipeg, at least as of 1857, ‘The Forks’ was “usually called Coblenz,” possibly a contraction of confluence, according to a letter to the editor, from Red River, printed in the Toronto Globe (27 Feb. 1857): 2, and a name “given to the good old classic place in Rhenish Prussia, owing to the junction there of the Rhine and the Mosella.” See also, “The Late Flood,” Nor’-Wester (1 June 1861), 3, which notes, “the point of land opposite Fort Garry, … might pass for the Coblentz of this country.”

In 1818, Reverend Joseph-Norbert Provencher, together with Father Sévère Dumoulin and seminarian Guilaume Etienne Edge, arrived from Quebec at Fort Douglas on the west bank of the Red River. They took possession of 25 acres set aside by Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk, for a Catholic mission on the east bank, across from The Forks/ Coblenz (the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers). There they built a small log chapel (9.14 by 15.24 metres). It was dedicated to Saint Boniface (a missionary to the Frankish Empire — of Germanic peoples — who lived from 675 to 754) in honour of the des Meurons and de Watteville Regiments made up of Swiss soldiers of German descent, previously employed by Selkirk and given farm lots in the area.

In 1820, work began on a larger chapel, measuring some 10 by 30.48 metres, built of wood (which was cut at Point des Chêne/ Oak Point, later the parish of Ste-Anne). Because Father Provencher was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Quebec with responsibility for the North-West in 1820, and was the consecrated bishop for the diocese of Juliopolis two years later, the church became designated a cathedral (named after a bishop’s official throne, a cathedra).

In 1833, stone masons were hired from Lower Canada to build a grander cathedral, which they finished in 1839. The ceilings and walls were tinted a “very little blue.” Afterwards, Sister Eulalie Lagrave of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal/ Soeur Grises/ Grey Nuns (who began arriving in 1844) added “a pretty scheme of floral decoration.” The cathedral had two turrets outfitted with three bells, of 181.4 or 226.8 kilograms each. They had been cast by the Mears foundry of Whitechapel, London, England (maker of Big Ben’s chimes). Bishop Provencher had his residence built adjoining the rear of the cathedral.

Construction of a convent for the Sisters of Charity was begun in 1845. It was located just south of the cathedral and was completed in 1851. It served as a mission house, providing “facilities for the Nuns’ various works of education and charity, which included caring for the aged and orphans, treating the sick, and instructing children.”

Provencher was made Bishop of the North-West in June 1847, serving until his death in 1853 at which time Alexandre-Antonin Taché succeeded him in office.

A fire destroyed the cathedral in 1860. The local newspaper, the Nor’-Wester (17 December 1860), reported that the fire “has never been equalled in this place for suddenness, rapidity, and destructiveness. Within an hour after it began, the Bishop’s beautiful residence was one mass of ruins, and the flames were raging wildly on the roof of the magnificent cathedral.” [For most of the original article online, see parts 1, 2, 3 (broken link), 4, 5 (broken link), 6, 7, 8.]

The cathedral’s bells were retrieved and sent back to Mears in England to be recast. Due to various mishaps, the bells crossed the Atlantic five times before finally landing at York Factory on Hudson Bay, from whence they were ferried by Thomas Sinclair Sr.‘s York boat brigade to St. Boniface in 1864.

In 1861, stone masons and carpenters were hired from Quebec to begin construction of a new cathedral, designed with a single steeple. The sacristy was erected in 1862. By November of 1863, the main cathedral walls, roof and arch were completed. According to the reminiscences of Harriet Goldsmith Sinclair Cowan, when the bells were hung in the new cathedral, Bishop Taché selected Mary, Florence, and James — the children of HBC Governor William Mactavish and Mary Sarah ‘Sally’ McDermott — “to be the godfather and godmothers of the three of them.”

The third cathedral would remain in use until the dedication of a new cathedral in 1908. (This fourth cathedral was in turn ravaged by fire in 1968.)

By 1870 St. Boniface Parish had extended across the Red River to include land on the west bank (later known as the neighbourhood of Fort Rouge).
