Kildonan Presbyterian Kirk

The Free Church/ Presbyterian Church in Canada sent Rev. John Black to Red River Settlement in 1851, making him the first Presbyterian minister in Rupert’s Land. The same year, the Hudson’s Bay Company granted a plot of land at Frog Plain/ la Grenouillière (Ayikis paskwaw) and £150 for the purpose of building a church. Beginning in 1853, Stonemason Duncan McRae supervised the construction of a four-foot-wide foundation topped by massive stone walls. Kildonan Presbyterian Kirk opened its doors in January 1854.

Although there were families of Selkirk Settler descent at Kildonan, the same diversity of inhabitants was found within the parish’s boundaries as was typical throughout Red River Settlement (the original Selkirk Settlers had actually been located in what became known as St. John’s Parish). Métis families with both French and English ancestors were neighbours of, and intermarried with, families of Scottish heritage.

(It is difficult to determine how many Selkirk Settlers arrived at Red River and how many stayed. Depending on the secondary source consulted, the declared size of the first Selkirk party to actually arrive in Red River in 1812 ranges from 18 to 23 individuals in August. A supplementary arrival of from 71 to 120 settlers took place in October. The third party of 1814 is most often broken down into two smaller groups of from 41 to 51, and 15 to 32 individuals respectively (though by one account there were 83 and 15). A final contingent of between 80 to 84 Selkirk colonists arrived in November 1815. That same year, however, something like 114-140 disillusioned Selkirk Settlers left Red River for Canada. By 1826, after two more mass departures, there remained at most 130 Selkirk Settlers — including children born after their arrival — though the number might be significantly lower. The total population, meanwhile, was perhaps near 2,000. [See ‘Overwhelmingly Métis’, this site. The total population figure is a guesstimate, based on there having been 2,751 people counted in 1832.])

According to the Archibald census of 1870, in Kildonan Parish there were 414 people who professed to be Protestant (though they might be Presbyterian, Anglican, or Methodist) and 96 people who professed to be Catholic (marked ‘RC’ in the entries below).

Kildonan flag

During the Resistance of 1869–1870, a flag was rumoured to been brought by Canadians from Portage la Prairie to Kildonan and flown in the parish. It was described as “a large ensign with the words ‘God Save The Queen’ stitched across it.” [James B. Stanton, “A Mysterious Canadian Ensign,” Manitoba Pageant 16, no. 3 (Spring 1971), http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/pageant/16/mysteriousensign.shtm. See also “Flags and the Red River Resistance,” this site.]

In February of 1870, Norbert Parisien was held captive in the church by members of the Canadian Party’s Militia who were intent on attacking Upper Fort Garry. During his escape on 16 February, Parisien shot Hugh John Sutherland. Parisien was recaptured and lynched, later dying of his injuries. Sutherland also died — after surgery preformed by John C. Schultz (who claimed to be a medical doctor). [See “The Three Deaths of the Resistance,” this site.]
