Headingly/ Headingley/ Parish of Holy Trinity

[under construction]

Residents of Headingly Parish in 1870, who were represented

~~~
Note: In 1853 Rev. Griffith Owen Corbett founded an Anglican mission along the Assiniboine River on a site partly purchased from and partly donated by the Hudson’s Bay Company to the Anglican Diocese of Rupert’s Land. For the first year the mission operated out of Corbett’s house. In 1854 the first church was built. It was named after Holy Trinity — the sponsoring church in Corbett’s former parish of Headingley, Leeds, England. Holy Trinity’s parish at Red River likewise became known as Headingley,  though the spelling often appeared as Headingly.
A school was built near the church in 1857. In 1862 a cemetery was established.
Corbett left his family and Red River Settlement in disgrace in 1864 after being tried for repeatedly attempting to induce an abortion on 16-year-old Maria Thomas, a household servant whom he had seduced.
A replacement church was built 1874-1876, but was destroyed by a tornado in 1884. The current church was built in 1885, but was moved closer to the Trans-Canada highway in 1950.
Headingly 3d church
The 3d Holy Trinity Anglican church, built at Headingly Parish in 1885 (photographed prior to being moved in 1950).
Most of the people who resided within the parish boundaries professed to be Protestant for the Archibald census of 1870. Those who professed to be Catholic are designated ‘RC’ below.
